Lament

Lament

Rebecca Khan

In the presence of my Lord
am shaking,
Contemplating my life of sin.
Uncountable blessings I was
forsaking.
Th e fifty-thousand-year wait
leaves me aching,
Fearing the truth I hide within.
In the presence of my Lord
am shaking.

On earth, I wasted time taking,
Favoring merchandise over
kin
Pure love I was forsaking
For praises of man, I was faking,
Intentions weighing less than
tin.
In the presence of my Lord I
am shaking
Money I was consumed with
making,

A competition with my neighbor,
I strived to win.
Useless against the Justice I
was forsaking
In the fi re my flesh is baking
In this place of smoke and
din.
And in the presence of my
Lord I am shaking,
Regretting the life I wasted
forsaking.
